Rock Climbing Near Me: Your Guide to Indoor Climbing in Jacksonville, FL

Typed "rock climbing near me" into Google and landed here? Good. You found it. Here's everything you need to know about indoor rock climbing in Jacksonville — and why Stone Climbing is the best place to start.

Premiere Indoor Rock Climbing Has Come to Jacksonville

For years, Jacksonville climbers had to make do with limited options or drive to other cities to experience a world-class facility. That changed when Stone Climbing Jacksonville opened on the Southside — a 16,000-square-foot gym intentionally designed down to the last detail to bring the best indoor climbing experience to northeast Florida.

Stone Climbing was founded by Eric Hires and J.T. Thousand, two lifelong climbers and Northeast Florida locals who opened their first location in St. Augustine in 2021. After years of success in St. Johns County, they set their sights on Jacksonville — and in doing so, made a deliberate choice to keep climbing local.

"We have such a strong climbing community here that deserves a modern facility built by folks who care about them," Hires has said. The Jacksonville location reflects exactly that philosophy.

What Is Indoor Rock Climbing?

If you've never tried it, indoor rock climbing is exactly what it sounds like — climbing artificial walls fitted with colorful holds inside a climate-controlled gym. It's a full-body workout that combines strength, problem-solving, balance, and focus in a way that almost nothing else does.

There are two main climbing styles you'll find at Stone Climbing Jacksonville:

Bouldering involves climbing shorter walls — ours are up to 16 feet — without a rope or harness. You fall onto thick crash pads. It's the most accessible entry point to the sport: walk in, put on rental shoes, and start climbing. No certification required.

Rope climbing (top-rope and lead) uses a harness and rope to protect you on taller walls. At Stone Climbing, our lead walls reach 50 feet — the tallest in the area. Rope climbing requires knowing how to belay, which may sound intimidating, but you can learn by taking our one-hour class and a little practice.

In Jacksonville, we have two auto-belays on our tall wall and more in our kids’ area, allowing first-time climbers to get a taste of rope climbing without taking a class or learning any new skills. You can also book a rope session with one of our instructors and have them belay you or your group for an hour.

Both disciplines are available to complete beginners. You don't need prior experience, athletic background, or your own gear.

Why Stone Climbing Is Jacksonville's Best Indoor Climbing Gym

A Facility Built for Everyone

Stone Climbing Jacksonville was designed from the ground up with tons of intentionality — not converted from a warehouse or office building, and not a franchise. Local architect Connor Dowling of Open City Architecture designed the building with natural light, a canyon-inspired layout, curated artwork, and top-of-the-line walls that are as beautiful to look at as they are to climb.

The owners and architect spent more and took longer to create something beautiful to show they care about their customers. The result is a space that feels different the moment you walk in.

Everything Under One Roof

Stone Climbing Jacksonville includes:

  • 50-foot lead walls — top-rope and lead climbing on some of the tallest indoor walls in Florida

  • 5,000+ sq ft of bouldering — beginner-friendly through advanced, with a top-out area

  • MoonBoard and Tension Board 2 — industry-leading training boards for climbers looking to level up their technique and strength

  • A full fitness center — weight room, cardio equipment, and yoga

  • A recovery zone — sauna and cold plunge for post-climb recovery (coming soon)

  • Communal lounge and workspace — because community matters as much as climbing

  • Auto-belay stations — so you can climb rope routes solo, without a partner

Routes range from beginner (5.6 / V0) all the way to advanced (5.13 / V10+), so whether it's your first day or your thousandth, there's always something challenging and fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in shape to go rock climbing? No. Climbing builds the fitness it requires. Most beginners are surprised by how manageable the less challenging routes feel — and equally surprised by how tired they are afterward. If you can climb a ladder, you can climb the wall.

Do I need my own gear? Not to get started. Rental shoes are available at Stone Climbing Jacksonville and St. Augustine. As you get more serious, your own pair of climbing shoes makes a meaningful difference — but it's not necessary on day one.

Is rock climbing dangerous? Yes, but that’s part of the fun. We do everything possible to minimize risk, but like skateboarding or surfing, climbing is still an inherently dangerous activity. That said, our bouldering areas have thick crash pads and rope climbing systems are designed with redundant safety measures, and our staff ensures every visitor understands the basics before they climb.

Can I come alone? Absolutely. Bouldering is perfect for solo sessions, and auto-belay stations let you climb rope routes without a partner. Many of our members started as solo climbers and found their community at Stone.
